Canon
PowerShot A5 Zoom, making it one of the best finished,
compact digital cameras on the market.
The PowerShot A5 Zoom is replacing the earlier
A5, now discontinued, and the standard of quality
established with it are maintained. Now equipped with
a 28 to 70mm zoom
lens, this lastest in Canon's growing line-up, is
bound to attract some attention.
The basic design
of the PowerShot A5 is maintained, along with its well-designed control
dial. The dial, wrapped with rubber, allows access to the basic modes
of the A5 Zoom:
Full
Auto (green mode)
Program
(P)
Panoramic
(permits stitching images)
PC
connect
Play
Multi
(thumbnails)
On
top of the camera and immediately next to the dial, Canon
has placed two multifunction buttons which not only allow
navigation in the camera's menus, but also for other functions
such as the flash, burst mode, self-timer, and exposure
compensation.
An LCD display panel, on the top left, is used to provide information
on all basic photographic settings without having to rely on the LCD screen.
In our March issue, in which reviewed the PowerShot
A5, we had remarked on how well-designed the entire
camera was, and how Canon had gone to great lengths to
make it rugged, yet elegant. We can only repeat ourselves:
the A5 Zoom is designed with the same philosophy, and,
when it is in one's hand, this comes through clearly.
