Although I was not totally enamored
with the ergonomic aspects of the Canon EOS 40D, its picture quality is
top shelf. Generally, photos had good color fidelity, were sharp and had
little detectable noise.

My review unit came with a 28-135mm EF lens.
I found the zoom range to be versatile although on more than one occasion
I longed for wider glass--something you might want to consider if you buy
this camera and intend to get by with a single lens for awhile. You can
get an idea of the zoom range of this particular lens in the photos below.

One feature that I really enjoyed
about the 40D was its fast sequential shooting modes. They allow you to
capture exactly the moment you're looking for. In the flag sequence below,
for example, I wanted to snap the flag unfurled, but the wind was making
that difficult. Shooting at three frames a second, however, addressed
the problem nicely.
Aperture: F/10 Shutter Speed: 1/250 ISO: 200
As intoxicating as rapid firing with the 40D
could be, many times it seemed that the auto focusing system couldn't keep
up with the machine gun speed of the shutter. That was particularly true
indoors where lighting conditions could be challenging. Nevertheless, a
few out-of-focus snaps could be worth the price of a worthwhile shot in
a sequence.

Indoor shots with the built-in
flash were good but oftentimes exposures were uneven. Rather than wash
out flash photos as is the case with many cameras, the 40D tended to err
toward the dark side.
Aperture: F/4 Shutter Speed: 1/64 ISO: 200
