PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

Set to wide angle and in Program mode, the Pro1 selects its widest aperture of f2.4 to capture this image. The pop-up flash is bright enough to cover the subject evenly, and there is no serious light falloff in the corners of the image.

Photo Information
Format: RAW Aperture: f2.4
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
Resolution: 3264 x 2448 Flash: On
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 7.9 MB (RAW)
22.9 MB (TIFF)
Focal Length: 28 mm (35mm Eq)
The photo shown here is captured in RAW format, and later converted to TIFF without any modification.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

At its full extension of 50.8mm, 7X, the Pro1's zoom is equivalent to a 200mm lens in the 35mm format. The lens is able to frame a small area of the subject and, in combination with the 8 megapixel CCD, yields an image that shows a great deal of detail.

Photo Information
Format: RAW Aperture: f3.5
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
Resolution: 3264 x 2448 Flash: On
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 7.8 MB (RAW)
22.9 MB (TIFF)
Focal Length: 200 mm (35mm Eq)

Aperture: f8, shutter speed: 1/100, ISO 50.

MACRO PHOTO

The second mode is a Super Macro mode that limits the zoom to between 42 and 90mm (equivalent), switches the image size to M1 (2272 x 1704 pixels), and allows focusing at a minimum distance of 3 cm (1.17 in.) from a subject. While the regular macro mode allows using the zoom to some extend, the Super Macro mode does not, and any change to the focal length cancels the mode.

The regular macro mode produces a field of view (horizontally) of 9 cm approximately (3.1 inch) when the lens is at the equivalent of 63mm. The Super Macro mode on the other hand can capture a field of view as small as 3.5 cm (1.4 in.) when the lens is at the 90mm equivalent position.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

The wide angle end of the Pro1's zoom offers a field of view equivalent to a 28mm lens, placing it in the same league as the Olympus C-8080 and the Sony DSC-F828. This type of wide angle is perfect for architectural photos, and indoor shots, but images will have some perspective distortion if the camera isn't level.

Photo Information
Format: RAW Aperture: f8
Exposure: Av Shutter: 1/160
Resolution: 3264 x 2448 Flash: Off
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 7.9 MB (RAW)
22.9 MB (TIFF)
Focal Lgth: 28mm (35mm Eq)

ZOOM PHOTO

At the maximum zoom position and at f8, the Pro1 yields very sharp images with a long depth of field. The Evaluative metering pattern is quite reliable, even with the sharp contrasts of this subject.

RAW format images allow a lot of post capture adjustments to be made. White balance, colour tone, exposure, photo effect, contrast, sharpness, and saturation can be adjusted precisely. And an Advanced Adjustment window can be used to control noise.

Photo Information
Format: RAW Aperture: f8
Exposure: Av Shutter: 1/80
Resolution: 3264 x 2448 Flash: Off
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 9.1 MB (RAW)
22.9 MB (TIFF)

NIGHT PHOTO

Since this camera is capable of long exposures, a photo taken at night is included here.

Aperture: f2.4, shutter speed: 15 sec, 50 ISO.
The maximum exposure time available on the Pro1 is 15 seconds. Exposures lasting longer than 1.3 seconds are treated for noise reduction post capture, using the now common method of having the camera capture a second exposure of the same duration but without opening the shutter so that only the noise is recorded. Then, using the noise data collected by the second exposure, the noise captured in the first exposure is eliminated.
The best night shots are captured with a 50 ISO sensitivity as it is the least prone to noise. Increasing the ISO setting beyond that noticeably increases the noise — even after processing — and at 400 ISO, noise is readily visible.

Still, at 100 ISO the noise in the image remains relatively light, and the image is useable.
