PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The images presented here are captured using the Rebel XT's RAW image format, which have a *.CR2 extension.

The images were then opened using Digital Photo Professional, one of the programs included with the camera. Although the RAW image includes the camera settings for the image, these are not applied, which allows them to be modified when the image is being processed prior to being saved into a more common file format.
Photo Information
Format: RAW (CR2 format) Aperture: f4
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
Resolution: 3456 x 2304 Flash: On
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 100
File Size: 9.9 MB (RAW)
23.4 MB (TIFF)
Focal Length: 18 mm = 28.8 mm (35mm Eq)

Equipped with the kit lens, an 18 to 55mm which corresponds to a 28.8 to 88mm focal length when mounted on the Rebel XT, the camera is able to capture a wide field of view.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

Zoomed in the RAW image exhibits a slightly different colour tone than the wide angle photo, and the colour balance needs to be adjusted to match the colour of the wide angle photo.

The 8-megapixel CMOS sensor yields a bright and detailed image, and while the RAW format is used for these images, in normal use the Large/Fine JPEG produces excellent results.

Photo Information
Format: RAW (CR2 format) Aperture: f5.6
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
Resolution: 3456 x 2304 Flash: On
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 100
File Size: 9.9 MB (RAW)
23.4 MB (TIFF)
Focal Length: 88 mm (35mm Eq)
Aperture: f18, shutter speed: 1/15, ISO 100.

MACRO PHOTO

Using the kit lens however, the closest distance from the front of the lens that can be used is approximately 12 cm (4.72 inches) and the field of view is approximately 7cm (2.75 inches).

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately shows the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

Once again, the advantage of a wide angle lens is obvious with a subject such as this. The lens is able to capture a large section of the building, a field of view that is very practical for outdoor/architectural photography, or indoors as it can capture large sections of a room.

Photos captured with the 18 to 55mm kit lens reveal no major chromatic aberration, nor any blatant barrel distortion as long as the subject is relatively distant.

Photo Information
Format: RAW (CR2 format) Aperture: f9
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/200
Resolution: 3456 x 2304 Flash: Off
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 100
File Size: 9.9 MB (RAW)
23.4 MB (TIFF)
Focal Length: 28.8mm (35mm Eq)

ZOOM PHOTO

The image the Rebel XT produces is sharp, has accurate colours and the deep shadow areas in this telephoto shot highlight one of the camera's strengths: very low sensitivity to noise, even at high ISO settings.

With the 18 to 55mm kit lens, no distortion or aberration is noticeable at the maximum telephoto setting, and the images show excellent sharpest uniformly throughout the frame, as they go at the widest angle.

Photo Information
Format: RAW (CR2 format) Aperture: f8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/160
Resolution: 3456 x 2304 Flash: Off
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 100
File Size: 9.9 MB (RAW)
23.4 MB (TIFF)
Focal Length: 88mm (35mm Eq)

NIGHT PHOTO

Since this camera is capable of long exposures, a photo taken at night is included here.

Aperture: f5, shutter speed 30 sec., 100 ISO.

Noise reduction is automatically applied to all long exposures slightly softening the natural sharpness of the image, but still making it possible to see a quantity of details in the image that would be impossible to see with the naked eye. In addition, as part of Custom Functions, the Rebel XT also offers an extension to the noise reduction feature that is designed for bulb exposures longer than 30 seconds.
