The Setup section is common to all the modes of the S500. Just like the other menus, it is presented as a combination of icons and text, making it legible and easily understood:
  • Mute: On or Off, turns off all camera sounds.
  • Volume: to adjust the sound volume over 5 steps for:
    • Start-up volume,
    • Operation volume,
    • Self-timer volume,
    • Shutter volume,
    • Playback volume.
  • LCD Brightness: to adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor over ± 7 increments.
  • Power Saving: opens a 2 option submenu to set:
    • Auto Power Down: On or Off.
    • Display Off: 10, 20, 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 3 minutes.
  • Date/Time: to set the internal clock/calendar of the S500.
  • Format: formats the memory card, and displays the card's capacity.
  • File Number Reset: decides whether file numbering restarts at 1 when a new or formatted card is used, or continues being incremented.
  • Auto Rotate: On or Off. When On the camera uses a sensor to keep track of its orientation while a photo is taken, and accordingly rotates the image upon playback.
  • Language: sets the language for the interface, English, French, German, Danish, Dutch, Finish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese.
  • Video System: NTSC or PAL.
A compact, well-designed and very complete printed manual accompanies the PowerShot S500. All aspects of the camera and its operations are covered and explanations are clear.

Software

Two CDs are included with the PowerShot S500. The first is Canon's Digital Camera Solution Disk (ver.17.1) and the second is ArcSoft's Camera Suite 1.3.

The Canon Digital Camera Solution disk provides software for both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh computers:

Windows Macintosh
  • ZoomBrowser EX 4.6
  • PhotoRecord 2.0
  • PhotoStitch 3.1
  • ImageBrowser 3.6
  • PhotoStitch 3.1
ZoomBrowser makes it possible to organize, review, modify, print and prepare photos so they can be sent as e-mail attachments.

Image editing is limited to adjustments to saturation, brightness, contrast or cropping. Altered images can be saved by overwriting the original which erases all the Exif data (the shooting data), or as new photos.
ZoomBrowser is particularly well adapted to bubble jet printing and is capable of printing more than one image or contact sheet in addition to printing one image at a time.
A commentary, or the date and time, or the file's name, or even a background can be printed, and photos can be cropped for printing.

ZoomBrowser also serves to launch Remote Capture, an application that allows shooting the camera from a computer while it is connected via USB. With Remote Capture, all the camera parameters that can be controlled physically — including the zoom — can be controlled remotely.
ArcSoft's Camera Suite 1.2 consists of two programs: PhotoImpression and VideoImpression, both offered for Windows and Macintosh. PhotoImpression retouching, improving or altering images with the addition of special effects. In addition it also provides dozens of page layouts to create postcards and calendars. While VideoImpression is a simple program to edit video clips recorded with the S500.
