Overall the Canon S60's interface
continues in the line of other Canon cameras in this series,
including the use of the button
which speeds access to the most commonly needed photographic
settings.
Although the menus have much in common with previous S-series cameras,
the S60 has the addition of a discrete animation at the top of the screen
when moving from one section of the menu to the next, and of clearer icons
for each section.
The Setup section of the menu, along with the My Camera options
that allow personalizing the camera, is common to all modes and provides
options to perform the basic configuration of the S60:
Mute: ON or OFF. Silences all camera sounds.
Volume: serves to adjust the volume of all sounds
produced by the S60 (from 1 to 5, or off).
LCD Brightness: to adjust the LCD monitor's brightness
(Normal or Bright).
Power Saving: determines the delay after which the
camera will shut down if there has been no activity (10,
20, 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 3 minutes).
Date/Time: sets the time and date on the camera.
Format: formats a memory card or microdrive. The
capacity of the card in use is displayed.
File No. Reset: ON or OFF. Serves to restart numbering
image files from zero.
Auto Rotate: ON or OFF. When on, images captured
vertically are rotated automatically during playback.
Distance Unit: selects the distance units used when
the camera is set to manual focus (metres or feet).
Language: English, German, French, Dutch, Danish,
Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Chinese or
Japanese.
Video System: select the video signal, NTSC or PAL.
As usual the Canon PowerShot S60 is accompanied by a printed
manual that provides easy to follow and clear explanations of
the functions of the camera.
Software
The Canon PowerShot S60 is supplied
with 2 CD discs. The first provides the Canon Digital
Camera Solution Disk, which contains all the necessary
drivers for both Windows and Macintosh as well as Canon's ZoomBrowser
EX, PhotoRecord, Photo Stitch and Remote
Capture; and the second CD offers PhotoStudio and VideoImpression from
ArcSoft.
ZoomBrowser presents photos
as thumbnails, and is also able to indicate all the shooting
parameters — with the exception of the actual ISO value
used when the camera is set to Auto ISO — for photos shot
with a Canon camera.
In addition, ZoomBrowser also serves to open RAW format images captured
with the S60, and can be used to adjust RAW images prior to re-saving them
either as JPEG or TIFF files (8 or 16 bit).
ZoomBrowser also serves as the
primary access to a couple of other programs that are part of
the Canon Digital Camera Solution disc. Remote Capture allows
controlling the camera from the computer when it is connected
via USB, making it possible to take photos, and adjust all the
camera's functions.
PhotoRecord is the other application which is called up by ZoomBrowser.
It serves to organize and create album page layouts that can be printed.
The second CD, ArcSoft
Camera Suite 2.1, provides 2 programs: PhotoStudio
5.5 and VideoImpression 2, for all
Windows versions from 98 SE up to XP; and Photostudio 4.3 and VideoImpression
1.6, for Macintosh OS 9.x and X.
PhotoStudio allows image editing and printing, offering some functions
that are different from those of ZoomBrowser. VideoImpression, as its name
indicates, allows editing the video clips recorded with the S60.
