PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The wide angle shot presented here is captured with the EX-Z1000's sensitivity set to 50 ISO. At this sensitivity setting, this subject, which the camera captures at the brightest aperture of the lens, is near the maximum reach of the flash. With more distant subjects, the only option is to set the ISO to Auto, and allow the camera to increase sensitivity.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
Res.: 3648 x 2736 Flash: On
Quality: Fine ISO: 50
File Size: 3.96 MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35 mm Eq.)

Albeit a touch dark, the image is sharp, and only the smaller details, such as the cloth's texture, have been softened by the compression.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

With the zoom lens at the telephoto end, the maximum aperture is only f5.4 and the image is a touch darker than it is in the wide angle shot.

The compression the EX-Z1000 applies to images captured at the largest image size and highest image quality is around 7:1, and it causes some loss of detail, as can be observed in the printing and background screens of the photographic paper envelope.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.4
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
Res.: 3648 x 2736 Flash: On
Quality: Fine ISO: 50
File Size: 3.99 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35 mm Eq.)
Aperture: f2.8, shutter speed 1/5 sec., 50 ISO.

MACRO PHOTO

The Macro mode of the EX-Z1000 is selected in the REC menu's Focus option. The mode allows the camera to focus on a subject that is 6 cm (2.4 in.) from the front element of the lens when the zoom is at the wide angle end.

At this minimum distance, the camera captures a field of view of approximately 7 cm (3.52 in.) when measured horizontally in the frame.

Macro photos show little macro distortion and, given enough light and a stable camera, the results the EX-Z1000 yields are excellent.

(Note that the blue areas in the image shown here are reflections, and not a chromatic aberration.)

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

Poor light does not prevent the EX-Z1000 from capturing a clear image that reproduces accurately the ambient winter light.

Using the default Multi metering pattern, the resulting exposure shows a good balance between dark areas such as the entrance area, and bright zones of the image such as the sky. It can also be noted that although the contrast between the background and foreground is quite strong, there is no serious chromatic aberration.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/250 sec.
Resolution: 3648 x 2736 Flash: Off
Quality: Fine ISO: 50
File Size: 4.06 MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35 mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

Zooming in on the entrance of the building, the shadowed entrance takes on a greater importance for the metering and can cause an overexposure of sections that are directly lit.

Zoomed in, the metering yields a brighter image as it does not have to take into account the sky behind the building. In turn, it selects a slow shutter speed of 1/20 second that requires the camera to be quite stable.

The image reveals a high level of detail in the entrance area of the building, and is clear enough that the small sign on the right side glass door is legible.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.4
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/20 sec.
Resolution: 3648 x 2736 Flash: Off
Quality: Fine ISO: 50
File Size: 3.98 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35 mm Eq.)
A bit of noise can be detected in the deeper shadows of the image, but the image sharpness is quite good.

NIGHT PHOTO

This camera is capable of long exposures, and an image captured late at night is presented to give an idea of its capabilities.

Aperture: f5.4; shutter speed: 4 sec., 100 ISO.

Although equipped with a Night Scene mode, the EX-Z1000 only offers a marginal capability for night photography since its maximum exposure time is 4 seconds.

As in all modes, the camera controls both aperture and shutter speed at all times, the Night Scene mode still allows the user set the white balance, set the focus to infinity and increase the sensitivity.

Worth noting, however, is the fact that the maximum 4 second exposure time is only available when using sensitivity settings of 50 or 100 ISO.

Increasing sensitivity to 200 ISO, the EX-Z1000 cuts the maximum exposure time in half, allowing only a maximum of 2 seconds. Similarly, increasing the sensitivity to 400 ISO cuts the exposure time in half again and the camera limits it to 1 second.

The result of this is that the brightest exposure is obtained when the sensitivity is set to 100 ISO.

Using these settings, and tricking the meter by covering the lens while it evaluates the scene, forced the camera to its maximum 4-second exposure, producing the image presented here.
