PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The flash of the EX-P600 may be small, but its output is not. With this standard shot the flash's output had to be turned down in the menu from its default setting of Normal to Weak as the image was simply too bright.

Photo Information
Format: TIFF Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Sp: 1/60
Res: 2816 x 2112 Flash: On (weak)
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 17 MB Focal Lgth: 33 mm (35mm Eq.)
For both the wide angle and telephoto still life shots, the TIFF format is used. When the Casio EX-P600 is set to capture TIFF images, it automatically also saves a Fine quality JPEG version of the image, which is used during Playback on the camera (a 17MB TIFF file would take too long to load). Although this process takes up more memory card space, it offers the advantage of allowing a comparison between the TIFF and JPEG formats.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

Whether at the wide angle zoom position or at the telephoto end, the Casio EX-P600 captures very detailed images.

This telephoto shot is a good example. The photo shows excellent detail as can be seen by the texture of the cloth, and the detail of the printing on the old photographic paper envelope.

Photo Information
Format: TIFF Aperture: f4
Exposure: Program Shutter SP: 1/60
Res: 2816 x 2112 Flash: On (normal)
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 17 MB Focal Lgth: 132 mm (35mm Eq.)

Aperture: f2.8, shutter speed: 1/25 sec.

MACRO PHOTO

In macro mode the Casio EX-P600 is able to focus on a subject 10cm (3.9 inches) from the front element of the lens. To increase the magnification, the zoom can be used almost up 16.33mm (76mm equivalent), just past the halfway point of the zoom's range. Then the camera captures a horizontal field of view of 5.4mm (2.1 inch) when measured from one edge of the frame to the other.
The advantage of being able to use the zoom to maximize the macro capability of the camera is that it completely avoids any distortion, yielding extremely sharp and detailed images.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance also provides real-life information on the quality of the exposure and reveals any noise that might be present.

The Casio EX-P600 is equipped with a light meter system that divides the light arriving at the CCD to calculate an average of all the readings, and decide the best exposure parameters. The resulting exposures are usually very precise and generally take both high and low light zones of the frame into account.

Photo Information
Format: TIFF Aperture: f4
Exposure: Program Shutter SP: 1/400
Res: 2816 x 2112 Flash: Off
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 50
File Size: 17 MB Focal Lgth: 33 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

From the same vantage point as was used for the wide angle shot above, but with the zoom set to its maximum magnification of 4X, the EX-P600 is able to frame just the entrance of the building.

The metering produces a very good image, and details can easily be seen in the shadow areas of the frame. It can also be noted that the shadows contains no noise.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f 4.9
Exposure: Program Shutter SP: 1/250
Res: 2592 x 1944 Flash: Off
Quality: Fine ISO: 50
File Size: 2.9 MB Focal Lgth: 132 mm (35mm Eq.)

NIGHT PHOTO

As this camera is capable of long exposures, a photo taken at night is included.

Set to Manual mode, the EX-P600 offers a maximum exposure time of 60 seconds.

The camera automatically applies noise reduction to long exposures, a process that doubles the time required to take the photo, by capturing a second exposure with the same duration as the first but without opening the shutter. The position of the noisy pixels gathered during this second exposure is then used to eliminated them from the first prior to saving it.
Aperture: f2.8; shutter speed: 60 sec, 50 ISO.
Set to its lowest sensitivity of 50 ISO, and with an exposure of 60 seconds, the Casio EX-P600 produces a superb exposure. The noise reduction system is very effective, leaving almost no trace of noise. Moreover, the image shows an excellent level of detail, revealing distant construction cranes against the sky.
