Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities
of any given camera model. The images are altered only in
terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG
compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that
any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to
the compression required to display them here. We feel however,
that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.
STILL LIFE PHOTO
This subject is photographed in a room that has
a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not
brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light.
The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.
The flash of the A340 very adequately lights the subject and there is no
noticeable light falloff in the corners of the frame. With flash photos,
the FinePix A340 can increase the sensitivity of the CCD to boost the effectiveness
of the flash (up to 160 and possibly 200 ISO).

Because of this, occasionally a bit
of noise can be seen in flash photos where the subject is a bit
too distant for the power of the flash.
ZOOM PHOTO
Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent
is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum
setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the
preceding photo.
Zoomed in, the FinePix A340 captures a slightly darker image, but does
not increase the sensitivity.
At the highest image quality, Fine, the compression is still in
the order of 7:1, meaning that the JPEG image is compressed to 1/7th the
file size the same resolution image would have if it were saved without
any compression.

good, the compression clearly lessens the amount of detail that
can be seen.

MACRO PHOTO
In macro mode, the FinePix A340 has a minimum focusing distance
of 10 cm (3.9 in.) from the subject. The macro mode disables the
zoom, locking the lens at the best focal length for macrophotography — wide
angle — and yielding a field of view that measures approximately
8.5 cm (3.3 inches) horizontally.
BUILDING PHOTO
This image is our outdoor test. The architecture
of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately
show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also
often reveal the quality of the exposure.
The metering of the FinePix A340 relies on a single system, a segmented
pattern that evaluates 64 areas in the frame to arrive at the best aperture
and shutter speed. The result of the metering are images that are usually
extremely well exposed.

ZOOM PHOTO
At the full zoom position, the lens exhibits no pincushion distortion,
and vertical image elements aligned on the edge of the frame show no curvature.
The exposure of the FinePix A340 is excellent, and so is the colour. The
compression however, even at the highest image quality, lessens the overall
image sharpness when the photo is seen at 100% on a monitor.
