The FinePix E510 is equipped
with a 1/2.5 inch, 5.36 million pixel CCD of which 5.2 million
are effective to capture a maximum image size of 2492 x 1944
pixels.
CCD sensitivity starts at 80 ISO, and can be increased to 100, 200 or 400
ISO, or placed on Auto which lets the camera adjust it over a range of
80 to 320 ISO according to the ambient light.
The Fujinon lens is a 3.2X optical zoom with a focal length of 4.7 to 15.1mm
that corresponds to
a 28 to 91mm lens on a 35mm camera.
Apertures start at f2.9 when
the lens is set to wide angle, and f5.5 when the zoom is at
its maximum telephoto, closing down to f8 in both cases.
In addition, a chromed plastic ring around the base of the lens barrel
can be freed by pressing a button to the left of the lens, making it possible
to attach an adapter to the bayonet that can support conversion lenses.
With the adapter (AR-FXE01) in place, it becomes possible to mount
either a wide angle conversion lens (WL-FXE01), or a telephoto converter
(TL-FXE01), or even a filter.
The shutter speed range of the
E510 varies according to the shooting mode in use:
with the Manual mode, shutter speeds cover from
2 seconds to 1/2000 second;
with the A mode (Aperture priority) a range
of 1/2 to 1/1000 second is available;
with the S mode (Shutter priority) and the Night
Scene mode, a range of 2 seconds to 1/1000 second
is possible;
and with the Auto, Program, Portrait, Landscape and Sports modes,
shutter speeds range from 1/2 second to 1/2000 second.
By default the E510 uses a centre autofocus system, but a
Manual focus option is available when the camera is set to
any of the P/A/S/M modes. Similarly, the default metering
is Fujifilm's well-known 64-segment pattern,
but while the camera is set to any of the P/A/S/M modes, spot metering
is also available.
Any one of four image sizes can be used with the FinePix E510. As is the
case with a number of Fujifilm cameras, only the highest resolution offers
2 levels of compression, the others being limited to a single choice that
applies a mid-range compression:
5MF (2592 x 1944) offers the least compression with an average
ratio of 6:1.
5MN (2592 x 1944) applies a stronger compression in the range
of 12:1.
3M (2048 x 1536) uses a compression ration that is approximately
12:1.
2M (1600 x 1200) provides a compression that hovers around
10:1.
03M (640 x 480) applies a compression that is around 9:1.
Image size and quality is one of three items that are selected in the FinePix menu
which is called up by pressing the button:
Quality: as explained above.
ISO sets the CCD sensitivity: Auto (80 to 320),
80, 100, 200 or 400 ISO.
FinePix Colour which has three options
B&W: to record the images as black and
white.
Chrome: to accentuate colour saturation
a bit like some types of slide films.
Standard: the default colour saturation
setting.
All the other photographic settings
available on the FinePix E510 are located in the main menu
of the camera which is displayed when the button
is pressed. With the camera set to the P/A/S/M the
complete menu is shown but, when the E510 is set to Auto or
any of the Scene modes, only the last two options are
presented:
Self-timer: On or Off. Controls the 10 second
self-timer.
Photometry decides the metering mode: Multi to
use the 64-segment pattern, or spot which concentrates
the reading at the centre of the frame.
Focusing has two options: AF, auto focus, or MF,
manual focus.
Sharpness controls the level of in-camera sharpness
applied to the image: Hard, Normal, or Soft.
Flash Brightness Adjustment provides a flash compensation
range of ± 2/3 EV, in 1/3 EV increments.
Option provides two functions:
LCD: to adjust the brightness of the LCD
monitor over 10 steps,
Set-Up: which is the access to the Setup
menu. (See the Interface and Software section
for a listing of the options available in the Setup
menu.)
The Playback menu maintains a similar
appearance to the Recording menu, including an access to the
Setup menu as part of the Option section:
Erase: to delete one or all images.
Protect: to protect photos or video clips against
being accidentally deleted.
Playback: to start a slide show with optional
transition effects between each image.
Voice Memo: to record a voice annotation, up to
30 seconds long, while an image is displayed on the screen
in playback.
Trimming: allows zooming into an image and saving
the zoomed section as a new and smaller image.
Option which has 3 options:
Volume: to adjust the playback sound volume
of a video clip or an annotation,
LCD: to adjust the brightness of the LCD
monitor over 10 steps,
Set-Up: which is the access to the Setup
menu. (See the Interface and Software section
for a listing of the options available in the Setup
menu.)
Still in Playback, pressing
the button
once displays the DPOF menu:
DPOF: serves to choose whether or not the date will
be superimposed on prints made of the images.
DPOF All Reset: clears all DPOF tags that have been
attached to images.
And pressing the button
a second time allows choosing which images will be printed, and
how many prints of each image will be made.
The FinePix E510 is compatible
with xD memory cards. The card is inserted in a slot
that is next to the battery compartment, and which shares its
cover door. As the batteries are not held in place, some care
has to be exercised while removing the card so the batteries
do not fall out.
The xD card is ejected by pressing
on its edge, and a 16MB card is included with the E510, allowing
the camera to capture:

The E510 is supplied with two AA-size
alkaline batteries, but is compatible with Ni-MH rechargeable
batteries, or with the optional (NH-10) battery pack.
CP-FXA10 Picture Cradle, the flexible plastic
cover that protects the jacks is completely removable.
Starting at the top, the yellow rimmed jack is for A/V out, the signal
for which can be set to NTSC or PAL in the Setup menu. Below is the USB
port (1.1), and it too can be configured for DSC (Mass Storage), PictBridge
(for printing directly to a PictBridge compatible printer), or Web Cam
(to use the E510 as a Web Cam — Windows only).
The last jack, near the base
of the camera, is to power the E510 from regular household
current using the optional AC adapter (AC-3V). Worth
noting, when the FinePix E510 is used with the optional Picture
Cradle it is powered through the cradle's own power adapter.
