PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The wide angle end of the FinePix E510's zoom is equivalent to a 28mm which gives it a wide field of view. The pop-up flash of the E510 appears well suited to the lens as it provides good coverage from corner to corner.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.9
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec
Resolution: 2592 x 1944 Flash: On
Quality: 5M Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.6 MB Focal Lgth: 28 mm (35mm eq.)
To obtain a moderately brighter image, the Flash Adjustment option of the menu is used and the level of the flash adjusted to +1/3, thereby avoiding any need to increase the ISO sensitivity of the camera.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

At the maximum power of the zoom the E510 captures a field of view equivalent to a 92mm which is a short telephoto. At this focal length, the maximum aperture available is f5.5 and to brighten up the image the Flash Adjustment has to be pushed to its maximum of + 2/3 EV. Still, the image remains a touch darker than the wide angle shot.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f 5.5
Expo: Program Shutter Speed: 1/64 sec
Res: 2592 x 1944 Flash: On
Quality: 5M Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.4 Mo Focal Lgth: 92 mm (35mm eq.)
While it is clear that the 5.2 megapixel CCD is capable of capturing a high level of detail, the compression used to store the image — even at the highest image quality of 5MF — causes some loss of the finer details, and noise is more noticeable with telephoto flash photos.

Aperture: f3.6 speed: 1/7 sec., Super Macro mode.

MACRO PHOTO

The FinePix E510 offers 2 macro modes, one Standard, the other a Super Macro mode. The Standard macro mode lets the camera focus on a subject between 6.7 and 80 cm (2.6" to 2.6') from the lens at the wide angle end, and limits the zoom to a magnification of 1.4X

The Super Macro mode on the other hand locks the zoom at the widest angle and allows the camera to focus on a subject a mere 2.6 cm (1") from the front element of the lens.
With the Super macro mode the field of view is the narrowest, yielding a horizontal field of view of approximately 2.9cm (1.2").

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

The 28mm (equivalent) wide angle of the E510 makes it possible to capture a very wide field of view with very little barrel distortion. The default 64-segment metering produces an excellent exposure, and no chromatic aberration is detectable.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.6
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/210 sec
Resolution: 2592 x 1944 Flash: Off
Quality: 5M Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.53 MB Focal Lgth: 28 mm (35mm eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

With its short telephoto, the E510 lens still frames a large part of the building's exterior and the shadowed entrance is not as dominant as it would be with a longer focal length. Still, the metering is precise, and allows the camera to yield an exposure that avoids overexposure of the areas that are brightly lit, while capturing a very good level of detail in the shadow areas. But, also visible in the image below that is cropped from the full size frame, at 80 ISO a bit of noise is detectable in the shadows.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.5
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/125 sec
Resolution: 2592 x 1944 Flash: Off
Quality: 5M Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.5 MB Focal Lgth: 92 mm (35mm eq.)
