PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

For this wide angle shot and the next, the telephoto shot, the camera is set to the Manual mode and the sensitivity to 80 ISO so as to avoid any noise. At this sensitivity, the built-in flash provides a homogeneous light and there is no visible light drop off in the corners of the frame.

With the Fine image quality, the compression applied to the image is relatively light, and does not soften the details contained in the image.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

With the subject now photographed using the maximum telephoto setting of the zoom, colours remain entirely consistent with those the camera recorded when the lens was set to wide angle.

The magnification provided by the zoom allows the camera to capture fine details such as the texture of the drop cloth, or the printing screen of the old photographic paper envelope. Moreover, as with the wide angle shot, noise is almost impossible to detect, even in the deepest shadows of the image.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f 5

Res: 2848 x 2136 Flash: On

File Size: 2.9 MB Focal Lgth: 108 mm (35mm Eq.)
Aperture: f3.6 speed: 1/7 sec., Super Macro mode.

MACRO PHOTO

Using either Auto, Manual or Natural Light mode, the FinePix F10 can be set to Macro mode. The mode allows the camera to be as close as 4 cm (1.56 inch) from the subject when the lens is at the wide angle end, and 25 cm (9.75 inches) when set to the telephoto end.

Set to wide angle, the image captures a field of view — measured horizontally — of approximately 4 cm (1.56 inch), while at the maximum telephoto setting, a field of view of 7.6 cm (2.96 inches) can be captured.

With the lens set to the wide angle, a setting which offers the greatest magnification, plenty of light must be provided to the subject, or a tripod should be used to steady the camera is the shutter speed is low, as the flash cannot be used. On the other hand, when the lens is at the telephoto end, the flash can be used since its effective range starts at around 30 cm (1 foot).

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

With a clearing sky in late afternoon, the shadows of the trees that surround the building make it a touch more difficult for the metering to calculate the exposure. Still, the 64 segment metering pattern is effective and does an excellent job. The image has no over or under exposure, and reveals a lot of detail in the shadows.

Furthermore, no chromatic aberration is in evidence, nor is there any barrel distortion.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.5
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/320 sec
Resolution: 2848 x 2136 Flash: Off
Quality: 6M Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 3.0 MB Focal Lgth: 36 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

Zooming in on the entrance of the building, the shadowed entrance takes on a greater importance for the metering and can cause an overexposure of sections that are directly lit.

At the maximum power of the zoom, the Fujinon lens' focal length is equivalent to 108 mm and therefore still captures a relatively large section of the building. Once again, the metering is precise and the exposure is well-balanced between the areas that are directly lit, and those that are in shadow.

Worth noting, the image shows very little noise, and the detail captured by the Super CCD is excellent.

Format: JPEG Aperture: f5
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/160 sec
Resolution: 2848 x 2136 Flash: Off
Quality: 6M Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 3.0 MB Focal Lgth: 108 mm (35mm Eq.)

NIGHT PHOTO

As this camera is capable of long exposures, a photo taken at night is included.

The Manual mode of the FinePix F10 being limited to a maximum exposure time of 1/4 second, capturing an image at night requires the use of the Night Scene mode, and of its additional Long Exposure option to access the camera's maximum exposure time of 15 seconds.

With the Night scene mode, white balance is automatically controlled by the camera, and cannot be altered. The result is that the image is a touch yellow, as the white balance is affected by the sodium vapour street lights.

Aperture: f2.8; shutter speed: 15 sec., 100 ISO
While at 80 ISO a 15 second long exposures yields a good image, increasing sensitivity to 100 ISO produces a slightly brighter and better image.

Interestingly, while the Finepix F10 does not appear to make use of a "standard" noise reduction system — the type that doubles the exposure time by capturing a dark frame to identify the electronic noise and then prune it from the first image — its images contain very little noise. Even when pushed up to its maximum of 1600 ISO, noise while visible does not ruin the image and it remains useable — comparable to what many cameras yield at 400 ISO.
