Our Opinion
For a while now, Fujifilm has consistently given their cameras colourful and easily understood interfaces. The camera settings that are superimposed on the image use white lettering but most appear on a black background which helps legibility. Menus are colourful and the limited number of options presented are spread out over five distinct menus: Photo Mode/DPOF, Photography/Playback and the Setup menu.

The Setup menu, which is opened through a section of the Photography and Playback menus called "Option", consists of 4 screens, each identified by a numbered tab at the top of the screen:
  • Image Disp.: offers 3 settings: Preview, On or Off. Preview displays the image — the zoom buttons can be used to inspect the image closely — and give the choice of whether or not to save the photo. On displays a just captured image for 2 seconds. Off does not show the image immediately after capture.
  • Power Save: sets the delay before the camera automatically turns off (2 or 5 minutes or Off).
  • Format: is to format memory cards (formatting a memory card deletes all images including those marked as "Protected").
  • LCD: On or Off. Decides whether or not the LCD monitor is automatically activated when the camera is powered up.
  • Beep: Off, 1, 2, or 3. Sets the volume of the beep sounds made by the F810 during operation.
  • Shutter: Off, 1, 2, or 3. Sets the volume of the shutter noise produced by the F810.
  • Date/Time: serves to set the current date and time on the camera.
  • Time Difference: allows setting a time difference between the current time and date and another location which can then be used when traveling.
  • AF Illuminator: On or Off. Controls the AF assist light.
  • Frame No.: Cont. or Renew. Cont. (Continuous) increments the file name of each new photo by 1. Renew restarts numbering files from 1.
  • USB Mode provides 3 options:
    • DSC causes the F810 to appear as a hard disk (Mass Storage).
    • Web cam is to use the F810 as a USB webcam*;
    • PictBridge is to print photos directly to a PictBridge compatible printer.
      * Only available if the computer is running Windows XP with Service Pack 1, and with Windows Messenger 5.0 or above.
  • CCD-RAW: On or Off. When On images are recorded in RAW format, and with a 2:3 format. Converted images are saved as TIFF and at the interpolated, 12 megapixel image size.
  • Lang. decides the interface language: Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish or Chinese.
  • Video System selects the video out signal: NTSC or PAL.
  • Reset: returns all settings to their factory defaults.
Fujifilm includes a printed manual with the F810. The information it contains is presented in a clear and concise way, and a detailed index is available at the beginning, making it very simple to locate information.

Software

Note: The software offered may vary depending upon the country of purchase.

A single CD-ROM is enclosed with the FinePix F810 in North America. The disc contains Fujifilm's Software for FinePix (version 4.2 for Windows and Macintosh), which is comprised of FinePix Viewer (v4.2 for Windows and 3.3 for Macintosh); RAW File Converter LE which serves to convert RAW images to TIFF; and the USB drivers. In addition, Pixela's ImageMixer VCD2 for FinePix is included, a program to create photo albums and slide shows which can be burned onto CDs or DVDs, as long as the burner is one of those it supports.

When installing the software on a Windows machine, a word of caution might be in order. The install program reboots the computer without asking permission once finished, a deplorable and potentially very disruptive procedure that can have some unpleasant consequences.

FinePix Viewer serves to see photos as thumbnails, or as a filmstrip with the current image shown at a larger scale above the strip, or simply by file names.

FinePix Viewer provides basic tools to adjust images if desired, and can be used to transfer an image for editing to a more advanced photo editing program.

FinePix Viewer can be used to do Automatic adjustments to an image, or used in Manual Adjustment Mode. The Manual adjustments allow for changes to brightness, saturation, hue and contrast, and the program provides a before and after preview of how the adjustment will affect the image. Sharpness can also be controlled using preset values (Soft High, Soft Low, None, Sharp Low, Sharp High). Last, an image can be converted to black and white, or sepia.
