In
a world of 2 and 3 megapixel cameras, the FinePix 1400 only claims
a 1.3 megapixel resolution. However, it should not be dismissed.
Sleek and compact in appearance, the FinePix 1400 offers a lot of features
such USB, a sharp 3X zoom lens, a pocketable size and even with its comparatively
modest 1.3 megapixel sensor, an excellent image quality.
The design uses a simple, 3 position, switch to turn the camera on, to
either the Recording or Playback modes. Intelligently, the
switch moves to the Playback position first, thus avoiding having to open
the lens cover when checking images. Sliding the lens cover back does
not deploy the zoom, only moving the switch to the recording position
does so. Should the recording position be selected with the lens cover
in place, the camera does not strain against it; instead, the LCD screen
lights up with the message: "Lens cover!"
Next to the main switch is a two-stage shutter release with the autofocus
done when the release is pressed down halfway. The zoom is controlled
by a nearby switch on the upper right of the camera's back.
Four
round buttons are positioned above the LCD screen, each having a single
function. Starting on the left, the first calls up the Display,
or turns off the informational screen overlay. The second button addresses
the Flash Modes (Auto, Red-eye reduction, forced, Off and Slow
Synchro). The remaining two buttons, are used to access the menus and
either confirm selections (EXE), or Cancel them.
Designed
so as to fall under the right thumb, the zoom button is bracketed by directional
controls which are used for the menus, and to review photos.
Ergonomically, the FinePix 1400 is a camera with few flaws, and one which
becomes familiar after a few minutes of use.
