The 6X zoom lens of the S7000 is similar to the one used
on the S602. The focal length of 7.8 to 46.8 mm is the 35mm
equivalent to a 35 to 210mm, and has apertures of
f2.8 to f8 in 10 steps while the shutter
speeds vary according to the shooting mode in use:
Auto: 1/4 sec to 1/2000 sec.
Scene Programs: 1/4 sec to 1/2000 sec, except
with the Night Scene mode which has a range of 3 seconds
to 1/250 sec.
Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority: 3
sec to 1/1000 sec.
Manual: 15 sec. to 1/10,000 second.
The FinePix S7000 is equipped with
a 1/1.7 inch Super CCD HR with a total of 6.63 million pixels
of which 6.3 million pixels are effective. Sensitivity starts
at 200 ISO and can be increased to 400 or 800 ISO. 800 ISO
however is only available for image resolutions up to 3 megapixel.
As with other Super CCD Fujifilm cameras, the 6 megapixel image captured
by the FinePix S7000 is interpolated to
a much larger recorded image size of 12 megapixel.
Regrettably, as with some of their other recent cameras, Fujifilm has elected
to severely limit the range of image quality options available on the S7000.
The least compressed JPEG format is only available at the interpolated 12
megapixel image size, while all other image sizes — including the
one that corresponds to the native resolution of the 6 megapixel CCD — are
limited to an aggressively compressed JPEG format. Moreover, although a
CCD RAW image format is available, it too is automatically converted to
the interpolated image size, making it less than useful, particularly if
images are converted to the uncompressed TIFF format producing an image
file size of 36MB without a commensurate improvement in the image quality.
The image size/quality options of the S7000 are accessed as part of the
Photo Mode menu, called up by pressing the button:
6M: 2832 x 2136 pixels (6 megapixel actual CCD
resolution) Normal compression.
3M: 2016 x 1512 (3 megapixel) Normal compression.
2M: 1600 x 1200 pixels (1 megapixel);
1M: 1280 x 960 pixels, Normal compression.
The Photo Mode menu
contains 2 other settings:
ISO: In Auto mode, the ISO range is limited
to Auto (160 to 800 ISO), 400 and 800 ISO. In
all other modes, the ISO can be set only to 200, 400,
or 800; and selecting the 800 ISO sensitivity automatically
forces the image size to a maximum of 3 megapixel.
Colour: offers 3 options, Standard, Chrome,
which slightly enhances colours, and Black and white.
All other options are found in the menu of the S7000, unless
it is set to Auto, in which case the only setting
is Self-timer, the first menu option in all
other modes:
AF Mode:Multi, automatically recognizes
any strongly contrasting subject near the centre of the
screen. Centre forces the focus at the centre of
the frame. Area, allows moving the focus area anywhere
in the frame when the Spot AF button is pressed in and
the 4 direction control is used to move the AF point.
Photometry (metering): Multi uses 64 segments
to meter the frame and applies scene recognition. Spot
meters the central point of the frame. Average uses the
64-segment metering pattern, but does not apply scene recognition.
Flash Brightness adjustment: adjusts the power
of the flash over a range of 0.6EV in 0.3 EV increments;
External Flash: On or Off. Allows the S7000 to
fire an external flash attached to its hotshoe.
In Playback the menu of the S7000 is even simpler:
Delete: One or All frames.
Protect: marks images as read-only to prevent
an accidental erasure. Three options are available, Frame which
is used to select specific frames for protection; Set
All, or Reset All to cancel all protection.
Auto Play: starts an automatic slide show with
1 of 2 time intervals and 1 of 2 image transitions.
Voice Memo: allows attaching a voice annotation
to an image. The maximum recording time is 30 seconds.
The Photo Mode menu, called
up by the button,
provides 2 options for Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) in
Playback. The first is to imprint the Date or not and
select which photos will be printed; the other, Reset All,
cancels all print selections.
Thumbnails of the photos in the camera can be displayed on the monitor
using the DISP button; and an image can be enlarged using the zoom
(T) button, up to 25X for a 12 megapixel photo. With an image enlarged
on the monitor, a trimmed (cropped) copy of it can also be recorded.
The FinePix S7000 has 2 memory card slots: xD
Picture card and CompactFlash I and Microdrive. Both card slots
are located on the camera's right side, covered by a large
and solid door. The CompactFlash slot is nearest the back,
the xD picture card slot is closer to the front. The S7000
is compatible with 340 MB and 1 GB Microdrives, and with Type
I CF cards, while its xD card slot accepts all current xD capacities
up to 512 MB.
The S7000 is retailed with a 16MB xD card, allowing the camera to capture:

3040
6M — 2848 x 2136
3M — 2016 x 1512

The left side of the S7000 has
a small covering door for the USB (2.0) port and the
AV (Audio/Video) out.
The Audio Video signal output by the S7000 is selected in the Set-up menu,
as is the USB protocol. (See the Interface and Software section of the
review for an overview of the options contained in the Setup menu.) The
USB protocol can be set to either 1 of 2 protocols: DSC (Mass storage
device); PC CAM (to video conference over the Internet with another
party equipped with a Fuji camera with the PC CAM option.
Closest to the base of the camera
is a DC input, covered by a soft plastic door. The DC input allows
powering the camera with an AC-DC adapter, an optional accessory
(Fujifilm AC-5VH/AC-5VHS).
Finally, the S7000 is powered by 4 AA size batteries and although compatible
with Ni-MH rechargeable batteries, is sold with 4 alkaline batteries.
