Our Opinion
An excellent job has been done on the interface used for the R-series. The R707 presents information over colourful, and very legible screens. Contextual help is available at every step of the way, be it while selecting a particular setting for an option, choosing a shooting mode, inspecting an image for problems, or even with photography in general, and subjects related to the use of the camera. In a sense, the HP R707 contains an internal, and very extensive instruction manual.

The Setup menu uses the same layout as all other parts of the main menu, and is accessed as the fourth tab at the top of the main menu screen:
  • Display Brightness: to control the brightness of the LCD monitor's backlight (Low, Medium or High).
  • Camera Sounds: to turn Off or set the volume of sounds produced by the camera during operation (Low or High).
  • Focus Assist Light: serves to turn On or Off the light that assists the AF system when the ambient light is too soft for the system to work by itself.
  • Live View Setup: this option decides whether or not the LCD monitor is automatically turned on when the camera is powered on.
  • Date and Time: to set the date and time on the camera, and select the way they are displayed.
  • USB selects the protocol for the USB connection: Digital Camera (PTP) which makes the camera appear as an imaging device when connected to a computer, or Disk Drive (MSDC) to make the camera appear as a hard disk.
  • TV Configuration: serves to select the television output standard, NTSC or PAL.
  • Language: selects the language used for the interface (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian or Dutch).
  • Move Images to Card: serves to move images from the R707's internal memory to a memory card.
  • Reset Settings: resets all parameters of the camera to factory defaults with the exception of the settings for date and time, USB and Video out.
  • Exit: clears the menu off the screen.
A printed manual is included with the camera. The manual is clearly written and its instructions are easy to follow.

Software

A single CD is included with the HP R707, containing HP Image Zone Software and ArcSoft's Panorama Maker for Windows (v3.5) and Macintosh (v7.1.9).

When launched, the program starts HP Director, an interface designed to launch the application necessary for specific tasks: HP Image Zone, HP image Transfer or Creative Ideas. HP Director also makes it easy to access on-line resources and update the software.

Image Zone is the part of the software designed to preview and print images.

Photos are presented as thumbnails, but can also be seen full-screen or as part of a slide show, while basic shooting data can also be seen by right-clicking any image.

Each separate part of the program is accessed using tabs at the top of the main window: My images, Edit, Projects, HP Memories Disc, and HP Instant Share.
The Edit tab is where images can be modified for red-eye reduction, resizing, cropping and orientation. In addition photos can be adjusted for colour, brightness and sharpness.

The third tab, Projects, serves to create albums, cards, flyers, and flyers based on templates. And the third section, HP Memories Disc, is intended to burn photos and albums onto CD-R.
The last section, HP Instant Share, provides an overview of the destinations that have been created for sharing images, and instructions on how the system works.

Panorama Maker, a program from ArcSoft which serves to create panoramic images by stitching photos captured sequentially using the Panoramic mode, is also included with the R707.
