PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The built-in flash of the Cx7430 is set to Auto, and fires to provide fill light to the subject. The flash provides good edge to edge coverage for the subject, and there is no noticeable light falloff in the corners of the frame.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.7
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/64 sec
Resolution: 2304 x 1728 Flash: On
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 632.9 KB Focal Length: 34 mm (35mm Equiv.)
While the colours captured by the Automatic white balance are correct, there seems to be a slight loss of sharpness — visible in the penciled price at the top of the photo paper — likely because of the compression.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on the centre of the image above to gauge the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as in the preceding photo.

Zoomed in, the Auto white balance remains flawless, producing an image that exhibits colours that are faithful to those captured at the wide angle setting although the frame contains a different distribution of colours.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.6
Exp: Program Shutter Sped: 1/91 sec
Rees: 2304 x 1728 Flash: On
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 652.4 KB Focal Goth: 102mm (35mm Eq.)
Still, here too, the slight softness caused by the compression can be seen in the image.

MACRO PHOTO

The CX7430 has a macro mode that lets the camera focus on a subject between 13 to 70 cm (5.1 to 27.6 inches) from the lens at the wide angle setting and 22 to 70 cm (8.7 to 27.2 inches) when the zoom is at the maximum telephoto position.

At the wide angle end and at the closest approach, the camera captures a field of view which measures 10 cm (3.9 inches) horizontally, and 8 cm at the telephoto end.

Aperture: f4.6, shutter speed: 1/91sec., 80 ISO.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

The multi-zone metering system of the Kodak CX7430 reliably produces images that are well exposed. But, as noted in the Image Quality section of this review, photos which are captured in bright sunshine have colours that are quite saturated, as can be seen here.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.6
Exposure: Auto Shutter Speed: 1/500 sec
Resolution: 2304 x 1728 Flash: Off
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 910.7 KB Focal Length: 34 mm (35mm Equiv.)

ZOOM PHOTO

At the maximum telephoto setting of the lens, the Kodak avoids overexposing the foreground at the expense of the deeply shadowed entrance which is then slightly underexposed.

The photo also shows that the lens has no noticeable pincushion distortion, as evidenced by the very straight vertical image elements that are aligned on the edges of the frame.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.6
Exp: Auto Shutter Sped: 1/350 sec
Rees: 2304 x 1728 Flash: Off
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 940.5 KB Focal Goth: 102 mm (35mm Eq.)

NIGHT PHOTO

Since this camera is capable of long exposures, a photo taken at night is included here.

Aperture: f2.7; shutter speed: 4 sec., 80 ISO.
The Kodak CX7430 has a Long Time shutter option, activated in the menu, that allows up to a 4 second exposure. A four-second exposure is sufficient to photograph city lights at night.

Set to the LT mode, the camera takes control of ISO (CCD sensitivity) and white balance. The ISO speed is automatically set to 80 ISO to avoid noise, and the white balance is correctly evaluated.
A noise reduction system is used, doubling the time necessary to capture an image by capturing a dark frame — an image captured without opening the shutter — from which noise can be determined and then eliminated from the first exposure prior to saving the image.

The system is quite efficient, and as can be seen in the image below which has been cropped from the original frame, the results are quite good.
