Getting to the DX6490's Setup menu
involves going through all the options of either the recording
or playback menus until the last option is reached. And, since
none of the menus recycle to the first option after the last
option is reached, the process is time consuming.
The Setup menu has a total of 10 options, plus the Return that allows
returning to the previous menu:
Return: returns to the previous menu, either Recording
or Playback.
Default Print Quantity: to set a default
value for the number of prints to be made when marking images
for printing (default is 1).
Quick View: On or Off. To select if the
camera will display a just captured image.
Advanced Digital Zoom: to decide if the 3X digital
zoom should be used, and the way the transition from optical
to digital occurs. Continuous allows a seamless
transition from optical to digital zoom; Pause forces
a halt before the transition to digital zoom occurs. Off disables
the digital zoom.
Shutter Sound: decides whether or not the camera
will produce a sound after the shutter is released. On or
Off.
Mode Description: On or Off. Controls whether or
not a description of the use of each mode is displayed
as it is selected.
Date and Time: to set the internal clock and calendar
of the DX6490.
Video Out: sets the video signal to either NTSC
or PAL.
Language: sets the language to use for the interface
(English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese,
Korean).
Format: to format either the internal memory or
a memory card.
About: displays the version number of the camera's
internal firmware.
Kodak provides the manual for the DX6490 in PDF format (Adobe
Acrobat) and Acrobat reader on a CD. The manual is thorough
and covers all aspects and functions of the camera and many
parts are interlinked, allowing jumping from one subject to
another. The manual is over 100 pages long, and contains a
number of colour illustrations.
Software
The Kodak DX6490 is retailed with
2 CD discs, one of which contains the manual in a number of languages,
the other a full copy of Kodak EasyShare. Three versions are
provided: version 3.1 for Windows, version 3.0 for Mac OS X,
and version 1.4.2 for Mac OS 8.6 and OS 9.X.
The software allows for the automatic downloading of images
from the camera, or from the optional camera dock.
EasyShare can also serve to burn photo CDs; print photos at home or send
them over the Internet to a printing service; e-mail images, which can
include the creation of an e-mail list or importing addresses from the
default e-mail program so selected addresses can be stored on the camera;
or connect to Kodak's EasyShare Web site.
With EasyShare photos can be edited. With photos
for editing selected, the program opens an editing window that
can be used to remove red-eye, adjust brightness contrast and
colour, or exposure; and allows cropping and rotation. When images
are being adjusted for exposure, contrast or brightness, the
image is divided into two, with the left side giving a "before" view,
while the right side shows the effect of the editing.
In addition, "Fun
Effects" are possible, including converting the image to
black and white or sepia, creating a colouring book effect (line
drawing), a "cartoon" effect (colourize), and applying
a "Fisheye effect (Spherize).
EasyShare can also be used to run slide shows. The slides are displayed
full-screen, with simple button controls at the bottom of the screen.
