The interface of the LS743 is one
aspect of the camera that would benefit from some rationalization.
The menus can only be navigated down to the last option, or up
the first, it is impossible to loop from the last option back
to the first, and this applies to all the menus of the LS743:
capture, playback, share and setup.
Therefore, getting to the Setup menu, the last option of the capture and
playback menus, means sifting through all the other options to get
to the one that opens up the Setup menu.
The Setup menu consists of 10 options, beyond the first one Return:
Return: returns to the previous menu, be it the capture menu
or the playback menu.
Liveview: selects whether or not the LCD monitor is active
by default when the camera is powered on.
Sound Themes: selects the sounds produced by the LS743. Shutter
Only, Standard, Music, Sci-Fi, Fun.
Volume: sets the volume of the sounds produced by the LS743.
Date & Time Set: to set the date and time on the camera.
Video Out: NTSC or PAL.
Orientation Sensor: On or Off. Rotates pictures
captured vertically upon playback.
Date Stamp: imprints the date on pictures.
Video Date Display: displays the time and date of
the recording during video playback.
Language: sets the interface language (English,
German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean,
Japanese).
Format: to format either the internal memory or
a memory card.
About: displays camera information such as the version
number of the firmware.
Kodak includes a succinct but
printed user manual with the LS743 in three languages. The information
is brief, but presented clearly, and all aspects and functions
of the camera are covered.
Worth noting, the manual is printed on thin recycled paper much like a
phonebook.
Software
The Kodak LS743 is retailed with
a single disc containing a full copy of Kodak EasyShare. Three
versions are provided: version 3.3 for Windows and Mac OS X,
version 1.4.2 for Mac OS 8.6 and OS 9.X.
The software allows for the automatic downloading of images
from the camera, or from the optional camera dock.
EasyShare can also serve to burn photo CDs; print photos at home or send
them over the Internet to a printing service; e-mail images, which can
include the creation of an e-mail list or importing addresses from the
default e-mail program so selected addresses can be stored on the camera;
or connect to Kodak's EasyShare Web site.
With EasyShare photos can be edited. With photos
for editing selected, the program opens an editing window that
can be used to remove red-eye, adjust brightness contrast and
colour, or exposure; and allows cropping and rotation. When images
are being adjusted for exposure, contrast or brightness, the
image is divided into two, with the left side giving a "before" view,
while the right side shows the effect of the editing.
