PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The built-in flash of the LS743 is powerful enough to light the subject evenly, and there is no light falloff in the corners of the image.

As can be seen below, the image is reasonably detailed, but the compression does soften the edges of objects.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f3.0
Exposure: Auto Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec
Resolution: 2304 x 1728 Flash: On
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 650 KB Focal Length: 36 mm (35mm Equiv.)

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on the centre of the image above to gauge the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as in the preceding photo.

At the maximum telephoto setting of the zoom, the lens of the LS743 corresponds to a 100mm lens in the 35mm film format, a short telephoto. At this focal length the maximum aperture available to the camera is f4.9, a smaller aperture, and we can see that the image is a touch darker than it is with the wide angle shot.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.9
Exp: Auto Shutter Sped: 1/90 sec
Rees: 2304 x 1728 Flash: On
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 755.5 KB Focal Goth: 100mm (35mm Esq.)

Aperture: f4.5, shutter speed: 1/180sec, 80 ISO.

CLOSE-UP PHOTO

In macro mode and at the wide angle end of the zoom, the LS743 can focus on a subject at a distance of 5cm to 1m (2 to 39 inches), and from 30cm to 1m (1 to 3ft) when the zoom is at the telephoto end.

At the closest distance, the lens captures a field of view measuring approximately 4.6cm (1.8 inch) horizontally, and approximately 10cm (4 inches) at the full telephoto setting.

While the field of view is wider with the telephoto, it offers the advantage of allowing the use of the flash without too great a risk of overexposure.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

As this shot illustrates well, the LS743 produces excellent exposures that have natural and bright colours. The photo shows no chromatic aberration, and the slight barrel distortion that can occasionally be detected in indoor shots is undetectable with this subject.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.8
Exposure: Auto Shutter Speed: 1/350 sec
Resolution: 2304 x 1728 Flash: Off
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 877.1 KB Focal Length: 36 mm (35mm Equiv.)

ZOOM PHOTO

Zoomed in, the LS743 provides yet another example of a perfectly exposed image, the result of the multi-segment metering that is used by default.

The areas directly lit by the sun are not overexposed, and those in the shadows, while dark, still contain some detail and are noise-free. The section below is cropped from the full 4-megapixel frame so as to include both highlights and shadow areas.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.9
Exp: Auto Shutter Sped: 1/350 sec
Rees: 2304 x 1728 Flash: Off
Quality: Best ISO: 80
File Size: 1.1 MB Focal Goth: 100 mm (35mm Esq.)

NIGHT PHOTO

Since this camera is capable of long exposures, a photo taken at night is included here.

Aperture: f3; shutter speed: 16 sec., 80 ISO.
The Kodak LS743's Long Exposure mode is activated in the menu. The long exposure mode allows the user to select a shutter speed (1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 seconds) while the camera selects the aperture.

When the long exposure mode is used, the camera prevents access to the ISO setting and forces the sensitivity to 80 ISO to minimize the electronic noise that invariably gets recorded over the course of the long exposure.
Once the image is captured, the camera processes it for noise reduction using a common method that captures a second frame with the same exposure time, but without opening the shutter. The noise captured in the second exposure is then used to eliminate it from the first prior to saving it to the memory.

The noise reduction system is quite effective, and the image the LS743 yields is nearly free of noise while retaining a very good level of sharpness.
