PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

With both the wide angle and telephoto shots of this subject, +0.3EV exposure compensation was used to brighten up the image a bit, so that more detail can be seen in the darker elements.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Manual (+0.3EV) Shutter Speed: 1/60
Resolution: 2048 x 1536 Flash: On
Quality: High ISO: 54 (Auto)
File Size: 905 KB Focal Length: 35 mm (35mm Eq.)
Only JPEG compressed images can be captured with the Coolpix 3700, but the compression applied at the best image quality is not too strong, and the cloth texture remains quite visible.

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

For the telephoto image, the Coolpix increases the sensitivity of the CCD to compensate for the smaller maximum aperture of the zoom. Without any exposure compensation, the camera increases the sensitivity to 124 ISO, while with +0.3EV the ISO increases to 145 ISO.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.9
Exposure: Manual (+0.3EV) Shutter Speed: 1/60
Resolution: 2048 x 1536 Flash: On
Quality: High ISO: 145 (Auto)
File Size: 1.04 MB Focal Length: 105mm (35mm Eq.)
As can be seen below in the cropped section taken from the full size image, even at this sensitivity level there is little increase in noise.

Aperture: f5.9; shutter speed: 1/60 sec., flash.

MACRO PHOTO

In the macro mode, the Coolpix 3700 can photograph a subject approximately 4 cm (1.56 in.) in front of the lens as long as the zoom has been moved into the macro range, the middle zoom position. The macro range is indicated on the LCD monitor by the macro icon turning green.

At that distance, the Coolpix 3700 captures a field of view of 3 cm (1.17 in.) horizontally.
At this distance, the flash is best avoided and plenty of light should be supplied for the autofocus, and the exposure.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

A low Winter sun lights the building in these photos, and the Coolpix 3700 captures an exposure that reflects the cold light.

As can be seen, the metering manages well with the mix of shadows and reflective areas.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.8
Exposure: Auto Shutter Speed: 1/222
Resolution: 2048 x 1536 Flash: Off
Quality: High ISO: 50
File Size: 977 MB Focal Length: 35 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

With this telephoto shot, the good balance between bright and dark zone provided by the matrix metering is easy to see. The entrance area is clear, and the planter in the foreground is not overexposed.

The Coolpix 3700 is obviously programmed to use the lowest ISO setting unless the shutter speed drops to a point where camera shake is inevitable. The result is a noise-free image.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.9
Exposure: Auto Shutter Speed: 1/126
Resolution: 2048 x 1536 Flash: Off
Quality: High ISO: 50
File Size: 1015 KB Focal Length: 105 mm (35mm Eq.)

NIGHT PHOTO

Aperture: 4.9; shutter speed: 2 sec, 50 ISO. (105mm eq.)
A series of photos was made of this subject, using the Manual mode and the Night Landscape Scene mode. In the manual mode the Coolpix 3700 increased the CCD sensitivity to 200 ISO, producing a slightly brighter but noisier image; while in the Night Landscape mode, the sensitivity remained at 50 ISO.

In both cases however, the camera selected a shutter speed of 2 seconds.
Although a touch darker than the image captured with the increased sensitivity of the Manual mode, the photo captured with the Night Landscape mode is more faithful in terms of brightness, and has absolutely no noise.
