In
design and appearance the Nikon's Coolpix 885 may be similar to the Coolpix
775, but there are differences externally, and some very important
ones internally.

The
optical viewfinder is flanked by 2 LEDs. The top one is red and indicates
flash ready or charging; the lower one is green and indicates focus, inability
to focus (flashing), or recording activity.
All the other controls are located on the back. The zoom control is uppermost
and also serves to magnify a photo displayed on the screen during Playback.
Below is the Transfer button, used to tag images for automatic
transfer to the computer. When the included software, Nikon View,
is running on the computer, pressing the transfer button will automatically
copy the tagged photos to the computer's hard disk.
The
Coolpix 885 is equipped with a 1.5 inch LCD screen. The biggest control
is the Multi-selector on the right of the screen. Not only does the selector
allow navigation of the camera menus, it is also a multi-function control
in the Recording and Playback modes. Then, it allows shifting the focus
area; clearing the screen of its overlaid information or turning the monitor
off. It can even be used to record a smaller-sized version of an image
being displayed on the LCD screen.
Below is the Quick button which allows a fast access to Playback
while the Mode Dial remains in an image recording mode.
When the Quick button
is pressed, the camera first presents a thumbnail of the last image taken
in the upper left quarter of the screen and then presents
the image full screen if Quick is pressed a second time.
Four more controls are aligned below the LCD screen, three of which provide
a function in the Recording mode and the Playback mode:
In
the recording modes (Auto, Scene and CSM) this button can control
exposure compensation, and aperture and shutter speeds in Manual
Mode when used in conjunction with the Multi-Selector. In Playback,
or Thumbnail Review Mode, the button controls single image deletion.
In
any of the recording modes, this button controls the flash modes,
cycling through Auto with Red-eye Reduction, Forced on, Slow Synch,
Auto, Forced Off. In Playback, pressing the button displays the
images stored on the memory card as thumbnails, which can be seen
in groups of four, or nine images.
During
recording, the button is used to select the focus mode. Landscape,
Macro, Self-Timer or a combination of Self-Timer and Macro mode.
In Playback, the button serves to display the shooting data of an
image displayed on the screen.
The
Menu button calls up the camera's menu, or clears it off the screen.
Menus are available in all modes except Auto and Movie modes.
