The fourth section of the D70's menu
is the Setup. It is identified by a yellow wrench icon
in the left margin. The Setup contains 14 options for basic camera
settings:
Folders: serves to create and manage folders into
which images are stored. Four options are offered: Select
Folder, New, Rename, Delete; and
folders can be named using an on-screen keyboard.
File No. Seq.: controls the way images are numbered.
Three options are available Off, On, or Reset.
Off resets the file numbering when a new folder is created,
a new memory card inserted or formatted. One continues sequential
numbering regardless. Reset restarts numbering from 1.
Format: serves to format a memory card or Microdrive.
The D70 supports both FAT 16 and FAT 32, allowing it to use
memory cards with capacities over 2GB.
CSM Menu: Simple or Detailed. Serves
to choose whether the Custom Settings menu shows all 26 options
or only the first 10.
Date: sets the time and date on the D70.
LCD Brightness: allows adjusting the screen's brightness
using a grayscale display.
Mirror Lock-up: Yes or No. Serves
to lock up the mirror so the low-pass filter that protects
the CCD can be dusted.
Video Mode: selects the video output signal, NTSC or PAL.
Language: selects the language to be used for the
menu: Japanese, German, English, Spanish, French, Korean,
Italian, Chinese, Dutch, Swedish.
Image Comment: allows adding a short text comment
with an on-screen keyboard to the data encoded with images.
USB: provides an option for Mass Storage or PTP
(Picture Transfer Protocol).
Dust Ref Photo: used to acquire a reference image
that is used by Nikon Capture 4 (available as an option).
The reference image serves to identify any dust that may
be on the imager so it can be deleted from other images by
Nikon Capture.
Firmware Ver.: displays the camera's current firmware
version.
Image Rotation: Automatic or Off. By default the
D70 records the camera orientation for each photo so that
they can be displayed correctly.
Nikon includes a printed manual with the D70 that has a size
that allows carrying it in a camera bag. The manual is clearly
written and explains all the capabilities of the D70 quite
well.
Software
(Note that the software supplied with the D70 may not be the same from
country to country).
Nikon Canada supplies the D70
with Nikon View 6.2 on a single disc for both Microsoft
Windows and Macintosh computers. The instruction manual for the
program, in PDF format, is provided on a second disc.
Nikon View is composed of four components: Nikon Transfer, Nikon
Browser, Nikon Viewer and Nikon Editor.
Nikon Transfer handles the transfer of photos from the camera
to the computer.
Nikon Browser (above) serves to view images
as thumbnails. The size of the thumbnails can be adjusted and
the Browser can be used to print images. Multiple photos can
be arranged on a single page, and if desired the shooting data
can be printed to the side of each image.
In addition, Nikon Browser is able to read and show almost all of the D70's
settings for each image.
Nikon Viewer is a utility
that produces slide shows which offer a variety of dissolve options
between images and controls over on-screen time and image size.
Nikon Editor allows changes to be made such as rotation,
contrast, brightness, colour balance. In addition, with RAW format
images, the exposure compensation and white balance can be adjusted.
The image and photos can be re-saved in either JPEG or TIFF format
at 8 or 16 bits.
