Reviewed October 2002.
The menu of the C-4000Z is extensive, reflecting the fact that the camera offers a host of features. The full menu, accessed by the Mode Menu option of the shortcut screens, is at its fullest when the camera is set to one of its still image recording modes.

One section of the menu, Setup, remains accessible to all modes (still image, movie, and playback).
  • All Reset: is set by default to be "Off". This option controls what settings the camera will "remember" the next time the camera is turned on.
  • Language: decides the interface language for the C-4000Z.
  • PW On Setup: Selects the picture that will be displayed when the power is turned on. A photo captured by the user can be selected to be shown every time the camera is turned on or off. By default, the camera shows an animation of the Olympus logo.

  • PW Off Setup: Selects the picture that will be displayed when the power is turned off. Again, by default the C-4000Z displays the Olympus logo.
  • Rec View: is set by default to be "Off". This option controls whether or not the screen will show the image while it is being saved.
  • Beep: controls the camera's beeping noise. The options are: Off, Low and High.
  • My Mode Setup: starts by offering a selections of 4 different "My Mode" settings, any of which can be configured for up to 32 specific items.
  • File Name: is to decide if the camera will continue incrementing the number at each photo, or start afresh every time a memory card is formatted.
  • Pixel Mapping: lets the camera perform a self-diagnostic of its CCD and its image processing circuitry. Olympus recommends the function be used once a year.
  • Screen Brightness: to adjust the screen as necessary.
  • Time and Date: to set the internal clock of the C-4000Z.
  • Measurement Unit: used for the Manual Focus mode, can be set to feet or metres.
  • Video Out: decides whether the video out signal is NTSC or PAL.
  • Shortcut: to assign any particular item from the menu to any of the 2 programmable options of the recording mode's shortcut screen.
  • Custom button: to assign a different function to the Custom button other than of calling up the Virtual Dial. Possible settings are: AE Lock, Drive, and ISO.

Software
In North America the Olympus C-4000Z is supplied with a single CD-ROM containing Olympus Camedia Master 4.0. In addition, the disc provides the 200-page plus camera manual in PDF format in English, French, German or Spanish.

The manual is very detailed and well-explained, while the PDF file is designed intelligently so any part of the volume can be accessed from the table of contents.
Camedia Master 4.0 is the "light" version of Olympus' Camedia Master Pro. The program is designed to handle retrieving the images from the camera or a disk on the computer, browsing, printing (photos or index prints), editing images and creating panoramas. In addition, it can also be used to create instant wallpapers (screen backgrounds), calendars, postcards and albums.
Image editing is well-rounded, even with this non-pro version, providing tools to:

  • Rotate,or flip.
  • Resize, or crop.
  • Insert text or superimpose a template.
  • Fix distortion.
  • Adjust contrast, brightness, gamma.
  • Alter colour balance, or hue and saturation.
  • Sharpen or Blur.
  • Remove red eye, or do an instant fix.
  • Convert the image to sepia or black and white.
