PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

For this wide angle shot and for the telephoto shot shown further below, the C-60's sensitivity set to 64 ISO and the image is captured using the TIFF format.

This wide angle shot the camera benefits from the largest aperture available (f2.8) and the image is quite bright.

Photo Information
Format: TIFF Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/30
Res.: 2816 x 2112 Flash: On
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 64
File Size: 17 MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

Now we zoom in on a specific area. The intent is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting. The camera remains at the same distance as with the preceding photo.

At the telephoto setting however, the maximum f4.8 aperture available to the camera produces a slightly darker image. Setting the camera's sensitivity to Auto to provide a greater range to the camera, results in an image captured at 100 ISO which is noticeably brighter.

Photo Information
Format: TIFF Aperture: f4.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/100
Res.: 2816 x 2112 Flash: On
Quality: Uncompressed ISO: 64
File Size: 17 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35mm Eq.)
As can be seen in the image below, the C-60 yields an uncompressed TIFF image that is remarkably similar to a JPEG, but which requires over 20 seconds to store.

Aperture: f2.8, shutter speed 1/125 sec, 64 ISO, Super Macro mode.

MACRO PHOTO

The C-60Z has two macro modes. The first is a standard mode that is selected with a button on the camera, the other is a super macro mode that is selected in the menu.

The regular macro setting allows the camera to focus on a subject at a minimum distance of 30 cm (1 ft). The super macro mode on the other hand, allows the camera to focus on a subject 4 cm (1.6 in.) from the front of the lens, but locks the lens at the wide angle setting.
In super macro mode and with the camera at the minimum distance from a subject, a field of view of approximately 4.7cm (1.83 in.) can be captured horizontally, but with some barrel distortion.

In the regular macro mode, the zoom remains useable and with the camera 30 cm (1ft) from the subject and the lens set to the maximum telephoto setting, a horizontal field measuring a bit less than 10cm (3.9 in.) can be captured.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

Under bright sunshine the C-60 captures an image with very accurate colours and good sharpness.

The exposure shows the reliability of the metering pattern, as there are no over or underexposed parts of the subject.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/800
Resolution: 2816 x 2112 Flash: Off
Quality: SHQ ISO: 64
File Size: 3.44 MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

With its 3X zoom, the C-60 offers a short telephoto that is equivalent to a 114mm lens. At the telephoto setting, photos show no overt distortion, and images are sharp from edge to edge. Moreover, whether captured at the telephoto end of the zoom or at the wide angle end, photos show no noticeable chromatic aberration.

As can be seen in the image below, set to 64 ISO the deeper shadows in the image show no noticeable noise.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/320
Resolution: 2816 x 2112 Flash: Off
Quality: SHQ ISO: 64
File Size: 3.5 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35mm Eq.)

NIGHT PHOTO

As this camera is capable of a long exposure, a photo taken at night is included.

Aperture: f2.8; shutter speed: 8 sec, 64 ISO.
The C-60Z provides an 8 seconds maximum exposure time in the Manual mode, and offers a noise reduction system, a feature absent on the C-50, the precursor model for this one.

At 64 ISO and with the noise reduction system, the C-60 yields excellent images as long as the AF has focused accurately. The noise reduction feature is very effective, and shots such as the one presented here are excellent.
Gradually increasing the ISO sensitivity of the C-60 yields progressively brighter images, but also engenders some unusual side effects which do not appear at 64 or 100 ISO. At 400 ISO and with a similar exposure as the image above (f2.8 and 8 seconds), all the white, overexposed areas become tinged with an odd pink tint (see below).
