The Setup section of the menu is the last section, and is common to all the menus — capture, playback, and movie — but, just like the other menu sections, the options that are shown vary according to the mode in use.

  • All Reset: On or Off. Returns the camera to its defaults.
  • EV Step: decides if EV steps will be 1/3 EV or 1/2 EV.
  • Language: selects the interface language (English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese — the available languages depend on where the camera is purchased).
  • Date and Time: To set the date and time on the camera.
  • My Mode Setup: allows saving or configuring a set of preferred shooting parameters in any of the four My Mode memories. The options are Present, Reset, or Custom.
  • Sounds: assigns a sound and volume for the Operation sound, Shutter sound, Warning beeps, or sets the Playback volume.
  • PW On/Off Setup: selects a picture and sound for when the power is turned on or off. 2 sounds or Off can be used, and either an Olympus logo display or an image that has been registered for that purpose.
  • Monitor Brightness: to adjust the brightness of the monitor.

  • Video Out selects the video out signal produced by the C-7070: NTSC or PAL.
  • Rec View: controls whether or not an image is displayed immediately after capture. Off, Auto, 3 seconds, 5 seconds, or 10 seconds.
  • File Name: has 2 settings, Reset (restarts numbering file names when the card is empty or formatted); or Auto (continues numbering files consecutively).
  • Pixel Mapping: The Pixel Mapping feature allows the camera to check and adjust the CCD and image processing functions. It is not necessary to operate this function frequently. Approximately once a year is recommended.
  • m/ft: Selects either meters or feet as the distance unit used for Manual Focus.
  • AF Illuminator: On or Off. Allows turning off the AF illuminator in situations where it would be either ineffective, or distracting.
  • Dual Control Panel: allows displaying all the camera settings on the monitor, echoing in greater detail the information shown on the top LCD display.
  • Thumbnails: decides how many thumbnails will be shown on the screen in playback (4, 9, 16).
  • USB: provides 2 settings, PC for downloading images to a computer; or Print to print directly to a PictBridge compliant printer.
  • ShortCut: serves to assign other functions to three of the recording mode shortcuts.
  • Custom Button: serves to assign a function other than Drive Mode to the Custom button [] next to the shutter release.
  • Dial: allows altering the way the Control Dial and function buttons operate. Normal is the default; Custom 1 allows changing settings by pressing the direct function buttons repeatedly; Custom 2 requires the direct function button be maintained pressed in while the Control Dial is turned to change the setting.
  • Scene: On or Off. Controls whether or not the Scene selection options are displayed automatically when the Mode Dial is turned to the Scene position.

With the C-7070, Olympus supplies a thin printed manual and a much more in-depth Advanced Manual in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. Regrettably, while Olympus manuals are usually some of the most thorough and well-organized, this is not the case for this one which, at least in our opinion, is not organized in a way that leads the user through a logical progression to an understanding of the camera's functions. For example, the descriptions of the parts of the camera, which link buttons and controls to the relevant sections of the manual, appears at the end of the manual just before the index, an often impractical situation when getting familiar with the camera.

Software

The Olympus C-7070 is supplied with 2 CDs: one containing the Manual mentioned above; the other provides the Olympus Master version 1.1 with versions for both Windows and Macintosh, and ImageMixer VCD DVD2 for Olympus 2.0. The enclosed version of Olympus Master is a "light" version, and the full version of the software can be purchased from Olympus via their web site for $19.99 US.

Olympus Master starts by opening a window from which tasks can be selected, such as browsing images, or printing, or printing online.

Olympus Master offers multiple functions. The program can be used to create image archives, either on a hard disk or by burning them onto a CD-R; print images at home, including the creation of album pages, calendars and post cards; assemble series of photos into panoramas; post them to a web site; or even prepare them for e-mailing.

The image browser portion of Olympus Master presents images as thumbnails on the right side of the screen with the folders on the left, making it simple to visualize images from one folder or another. Moreover, the size of the thumbnails can be modified and the properties of images can be shown, including a histogram for any selected image.
Olympus Master also serves to read RAW images. Images can be edited for contrast, brightness, exposure compensation, sharpness, white balance, and saturation. Edited photos can then be saved as JPEG or TIFF, with or without the inclusion of the EXIF data, which records the date and time at which the image was captured in addition to the camera settings.
As noted above, the installation of Olympus Master also installs ImageMixer VCD DVD2, a program that serves to create and burn CDs and DVDs.
However, users are in for a surprise when they try to launch the program from the icon it places on their desktop: the program only works if the full version of Olympus Master is purchased...
