Our Opinion
The menus of the C-770UZ are very legible and only a handful of its options require special exploration. Generally, most of the terms used to describe options are readily understandable, and so are the choices presented for each.

As with other Olympus cameras, some selections or modes affect the options that are shown in the menus. For example, in the Camera menu for the Program mode, the A/S/M option which serves to select Aperture or Shutter Priority, or Manual mode when the camera's Mode dial is set to A/S/M shows, but cannot be selected. Similarly, if a non-Olympus xD card is used in the camera, the Panorama option cannot be selected.

All modes have an access to the Setup menu, but here again some options only appear in specific modes. Whatever the mode however, the Setup menu serves to decided basic camera functions:
  • All Reset: On or Off. This option decides whether or not the camera will return to the settings in use before it was turned off. Off is the default, and if left to this setting the camera will return to all its factory defaults every time it is powered up.
  • Language: a choice of 4 interface languages are provided (English, French German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese).
  • PW ON/OFF Setup: serves to choose if a picture and sound are played when the camera is turned on or off.
  • Screen Setup (Playback mode only): selects a photo to display instead of the Olympus logo animation which is the default.
  • Rec View: On or Off. Briefly presents a photo after capture.
  • Sleep: Sets the delay time before the camera turns off automatically (30 seconds, 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes).
  • My Mode Setup: selects and sets the My Mode configuration. Options are Current, Reset, or Custom 1, 2, 3, or 4.
  • File Name: Auto (series file numbering), or Reset, the camera restarts numbering files from 1 every time the card is formatted, or all the images are deleted.
  • Pixel Mapping: a self-diagnostic test of the camera to identify possibly defective pixels on the CCD and omit them from the image data.
  • LCD Brightness: Increase or Decrease the backlight intensity.
  • Time/Date: Sets the internal clock.
  • m or ft: selects metres or feet for the distance units of the manual focus mode.
  • Video Out: To select the video output for NTSC or PAL televisions.
  • Short Cut: assigns functions to 3 of the 4 options on the shortcut menu of the recording modes.
  • Custom Button: assigns an alternate function to the AE Lock button.
  • Beep: On or Off. Controls camera beeps during operation.
  • Shutter Sound: select either one of 2 shutter sounds or Off.
  • Index Display (Playback mode only): decides whether 4, 9 or 16 thumbnail images will be displayed on the screen in Playback when the zoom button is pressed to the W side.
  • Volume (Playback mode only): controls the volume of sounds in playback, 5 increments or Off.
A full manual in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format is provided with the C-770UZ. The manual is complete and well-organized making it simple to find information on camera functions. Explanations are clear and the only regret one has is that a computer is required to consult the manual.

Software

Two discs are included with the North American version of the C-770UZ. One offers Olympus Camedia Master 4.2, the other an Olympus version of Ulead's VideoStudio SE Basic.

Camedia Master is distributed with every Olympus digital camera camera, and even with Olympus' photo printers. The program handles multiple activities from retrieving images to organizing them and printing them. Index prints, calendars, postcards, and pre-formatted album pages can be produced, as well as panoramas.

Some global image editing is also available, ranging from cropping and resizing and adjusting brightness, contrast, gamma, colour balance, hue and saturation, sharpness and blur to adding superimposed templates and text. In addition, an automatic red-eye reduction system is offered as is the possibility of changing the image to sepia or black and white.

The supplied version of Camedia Master can be upgraded to the Pro version at a modest cost on Olympus Web sites, which then supplies the user with a new serial number to unlock all the features of the software.
Ulead's VideoSudio 7 is the light version of the program. VideoStudio can be used to edit movies captured with the C-770UZ, and supports breaking up movies into separate tracks arranging scenes, applying special effects, overlaying images, adding animated titles or a voiceover narration or background music.

The resulting video can then be output as DVD or VCD.
