The
Olympus 340L is a megapixel camera. Its 1/3 inch - 1,310,000 pixel CCD
is one of the largest currently found in Point and Shoot type digital
cameras. This makes it possible to capture images at 2 different resolution:
1280 x 960 pixels and the comon 640 x 480 pixels. Two levels of JPEG compression
are also available in the larger image format.
The
power up speed of the 340L is one of the fastest we have seen, nearly
instantaneous (less than 1 sec), slide the cover back and the camera is
ready to shoot.
A
5.1 cm (2") TFT screen on the back of the camera can be activated for
review or preview, and gives a bright and clear image.
The
flash gives good coverage up to a maximum range of 3m (10'),
but can introduce a slight blue tone in images when used in conjunction
with the macro mode. Camera
modes include macro (down to 4"), panorama (see further) and numerous
options for printing directly to an Olympus P-300 printer.
Equipped with a 4MB SSFDC memory card, which allows up to 9 high resolution
images to be stored. Olympus, amongst others, offers Smart Media cards
up to 16 MB.
