The Olympus E-3 takes outstanding
photographs indoors as well as out. Its exposure system does an excellent
job of analyzing the lighting in a scene and producing arresting photographs.
On most occasions, I found the 12-60mm telephoto lens (24-120mm approximate
equivalent) very versatile in nabbing the shot that I wanted when I wanted
it.
Macro images captured with camera's
lens at maximum telephoto were very sharp and the detail nicely rendered.
The E-3's support of rapid sequential
shooting--five frames per second in high mode and from two to four fps
in low mode--coupled with its high-speed auto focusing system enables
a photographer to catch just the right moment when circumstance demand
it.

Using a camera's built-in
flash outdoors to bring out detail in a scene can be a dice-roll with
some DSCs, but the E-3's exposure system does a good job of dealing with
the problem.
Aperture: F/5.6 Shutter Speed: 1/160 ISO: 100

Users of flash units built
into digital cameras are very familar with "wash out"--where
a photo is overexposed by the flash. Although the E-3 does a decent job
of coping with that issue, it goes a step further by allowing you to flash-bracket
a photo. With flash bracketing on, the camera will take three pictures
at intensities determined by you. The first exposure is at "optimum"
flash (top photo); the second at a lower intensity (middle photo); and
the third at a higher intensity.

The 12-60mm lens included with
my E-3 review unit can produce dramatic photos at its wide end and has enough
magnification at its telephoto pole to corral distant subjects.
Aperture: F/20 Shutter Speed: 1/60 ISO: 100
Aperture: F/16 Shutter Speed: 1/125 ISO: 160
A nifty design feature of the E-3 is its
pivoting LCD. It enables you to get offbeat perspectives for your images
without performing ostentatious maneuvers such as lying on the ground
for extreme low angle shots or climbing trees for high angle ones.
Aperture: F/4 Shutter Speed: 1/60 ISO: 100
Although the E-3 supports light sensitivity settings
up to ISO 3200, photo quality drops off long before that setting is reached.
This shot at ISO 500 is OK at a reduced resolution, but at 100 percent,
noise is evident as the photo showing the eye detail illustrates.
Aperture: F/3.5utter Speed: 1/5 ISO: 500
