PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

The flash of the DSC-T1 is most effective when the lens is at the wide angle setting which allows the biggest aperture to be used. Then, the flash is able to throw enough light to cover up to 2m (6.5 ft) as long as there is some ambient light.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f3.5
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/40
Resolution: 2592 x 1944 Flash: On
Quality: Fine ISO: 100
File Size: 2.12MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

The intent with this photo is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting, with the camera remaining at the same distance as in the preceding photo.

Zoomed in, the aperture is effectively a bit smaller, and the little flash of T1 needs to be set in the menu to its maximum output. In addition, for this shot, an exposure compensation of +0.7 EV was used to further brighten the image.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f4.4
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/40
Resolution: 2592 x 1944 Flash: On
Quality: Fine ISO: 100
File Size: 2 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35mm Eq.)
As can be seen in the cropped sections of the still life photos taken from the original images, some noise can be discerned and the compression lessens the image sharpness slightly.

MACRO PHOTO

Aperture: f2.5, shutter speed: 1/80 sec. TIFF format (22.9 MB)
The DSC-T1 provides 2 macro modes. One is the standard mode, turned on by pressing the right arrow control. That macro function provides a minimum focus distance of 8 cm (3.12 in.) when the lens is set to the wide angle position, and 25 cm (9.75 in.) at the telephoto setting.

The DSC-T1 also offers a Magnifying Glass Mode, effectively a Super macro mode that sets the lens to its "sweet point" for macro shots.
In that mode, the zoom is locked — although the digital zoom can be used — and the camera can be brought as close as 1cm (0.39 in.) from the subject. At that distance, the T1 effectively captures a field of view measuring 1.7 cm (0.663 in.) from one edge of the frame to the other horizontally. Although this mode permits an impressive magnification, the T1 has no tripod mount which makes tricky to hold it steadily, and making sure that a subject a mere 1 cm from the lens is correctly lit can be difficult.

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

Outdoors, and even with the sun directly on its LCD monitor, the DSC-T1's screen remains legible. Moreover, when there is plenty of light, the backlight can be turned off, lessening the load on the battery.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.6
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/250
Resolution: 2592 x 1944 Flash: Off
Quality: Fine ISO: 100
File Size: 1.99MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

At the maximum telephoto setting, the blue-green colour of the building is consistent with the one in the wide angle shot; and the exposure is quite accurate.

As with the wide angle shot, the compression tends to slightly lessen the amount of detail captured by the lens, and the shadow areas — visible behind the building's glass doors — show a bit of noise.
