As are all digital cameras in the pocket compact category, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W-120 is built to travel inconspicuously. It easily fits into a shirt pocket or slim purse.
At the front of the camera is a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with a 4x optical zoom--the equivalent of a 32-128 millimeter 35mm zoom lens-- and an aperture range of F/2.8-5.8. At 11 o'clock from the lens are the unit's flash and microphone, both flush with the surface of the camera. The front of the optical viewfinder and the lamp used by the DSC's self-timer and smile shutter technology can be found at one o'clock.

The back of the camera is dominated by a 2.5-inch LCD, which has a resolution of 115,200 dots. Above the left corner of the LCD is the optical viewfinder. It measures about 0.2 inches diagonally and does not have a diopter for accommodating eyesight variations. Nevertheless, it comes in handy when shooting in bright sunlight, which washes out the LCD. The display is bright, sharp and colorful, but what you see on it isn't always reflected in the final product. Beside the viewfinder are LEDs for signaling when the flash is recharging and when the camera is busy storing an image.

At the right corner of the LCD is a rocker button for controlling the camera's zoom. Below that is the mode dial. It gives you quick access to shooting modes, such as Auto and Program; scene modes like portrait and landscape; and video capture.

Below the mode dial are the menu and home buttons. Functions accessible from the menu and home buttons very according to what mode the camera is in.

The arrow pad, which is used to navigate through menus that appear on the LCD, can be found below the menu and home buttons. After selecting a menu item, it can be activated by pressing the button at the center of the arrow pad. Functions such as changing the information displayed on the LCD, activating macro mode, changing flash settings and activating the self timer can be swiftly enabled by pressing various compass points on the arrow dial.

Below the arrow dial are buttons for playing back images in the camera and for activating the unit's slideshow function.

At the top of the snapper is a small speaker, a power button and the shutter button.
At the bottom of the DSC is a proprietary plug for the camera's USB-video cable, a tripod mount and the door to the battery and storage card compartment. The compartment is easy to open but closing it takes a little practice. It needs to sit just so before it slides securely closed.

Overall, the W120's controls are logically placed and intuitive to use, and for such a small camera remarkably easy to finger.
