Here are a
few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model.
The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction
and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that
any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression
required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully
represent the results we experienced.
STILL LIFE
PHOTO
This scene was photographed indoors with
a flash in a room with subdued natural lighting.
This photo is taken at the widest setting of camera's zoom lens using
Multi metering mode. The picture is evenly exposed and the scene is lit
adequately. When viewed at 100 percent in an image editor, the image was
very noisy, as is shown in the photo on the right. Detail in the picture
was soft, especially the red cloth, which was muddy. Color fidelity was
good.

ZOOM
STILL LIFE PHOTO
This shot tests the camera's zoom on the still life scene
under the same lighting and metering conditions.
This image taken with the zoom at maximum telephoto was also noisy. Viewing
the picture at 100 percent in a photo editing program showed that the
lettering on the body of the camera in the shot to be obscure and detail
soft throughout the frame. Color fidelity was good.

MACRO PHOTO
This
is a macro test shot. The test object is about 4.5 inches wide by 3.5
inches high.
This image was taken with the camera in macro mode and about
six inches from the subject. Viewed at 100 percent in a photo editor,
there was very little noise in the shot. Detail was sharp, especially
the latticework in the object. Colors were true.
BUILDING
PHOTO
This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the
building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence
of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of
the exposure.
Metered using the default pattern, which evaluates 256 segments in the
frame, the F40fd captures a perfect exposure. The image is free
of any barrel distortion, and there is no noticeable chromatic aberration
on the edges of contrasting areas.
The image sharpness is quite high, as can be seen below.

ZOOM BUILDING
PHOTO
Without moving from the spot that the building
photo was taken, the image of the entrance to house was captured with
the camera's zoom at maximum telephoto. Viewed at 100 percent in a photo
editor little noise was detected. Detail and sharpness were very good
throughout the frame. Color fidelity was good and reflected what was seen
by the human eye.
