PLEASE NOTE:

Here are a few images that accurately reflect the abilities of any given camera model. The images are altered only in terms of size and sharpness after reduction and by the JPEG compression used. Unless otherwise mentioned, assume that any marbling or artifacts visible in the images are due to the compression required to display them here. We feel however, that they still faithfully represent the results we experienced.

STILL LIFE PHOTO

This subject is photographed in a room that has a mix of fluorescent and incandescent light, but which is not brightly lit. The camera's flash is used to add fill light. The backdrop is 1.95 m (6.5 ft) from the camera.

Using the default capture settings of the Program mode, the W50 captures an image that is slightly dark. Since exposure compensation has no noticeable effect when the flash is used, the only alternative is to set the sensitivity to Auto and allow the camera to increase it as necessary. However, with this subject the W50 steadfastly remains at 80 ISO, yielding a slightly dark image, but one that is noise-free.
Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f2.8
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/40 sec.
Resolution: 2816 x 2112 Flash: On
Quality: Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.3 MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35 mm Eq.)

ZOOM PHOTO

The intent with this photo is to test the sharpness of the image at the zoom's maximum setting, with the camera remaining at the same distance as in the preceding photo.

As it was for the wide angle shot, the telephoto shot is captured with the ISO sensitivity set to Auto.

But unlike with the wide angle shot, here, to compensate for the maximum aperture of the lens which is only f5.2, the camera boosts the sensitivity to 125 ISO. This has the effect of increasing the effectiveness of the flash, and brightening up the image.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.2
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/50 sec.
Resolution: 2816 x 2112 Flash: On
Quality: Fine ISO: 125
File Size: 2.2 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35 mm Eq.)
Aperture: f2.8, shutter speed: 1/40 sec., 80 ISO.

MACRO PHOTO

When the DSC-W50 is set to the Macro mode, it is capable of focusing on a subject that is 2 cm (0.8 in.) from the front element of its lens when it is set to the widest angle. At the telephoto end, on the other hand, the camera needs to be at least 30 cm (1 ft.) from the subject for focus.

At the closest distance, the camera captures a field of view of 2.5 cm (1 in.), while at the maximum telephoto setting, the field of view captured is of 9.5 cm (3.8 in.).

BUILDING PHOTO

This image is our outdoor test. The architecture of the building, in particular the angled girders, immediately show the presence of jaggies. The shadowed entrance can also often reveal the quality of the exposure.

Like all cameras, it is when it is used outdoors and with good weather that the W50 yields its best images. Its Multi metering pattern is very effective, and even with complexly lit subjects tends to produce well-balanced exposures that take into account both highlights and shadow areas. Moreover, colours are natural and well saturated.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f7.1
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/1250 sec.
Resolution: 2816 x 2112 Flash: Off
Quality: Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.3 MB Focal Length: 38 mm (35 mm Eq.)
While the image reveals no chromatic aberration, nor at this distance from the subject any barrel distortion, we do note a slight loss of sharpness in the corners of the frame when it is seen on a monitor at 100% scale.

ZOOM PHOTO

Zooming in on the entrance of the building, the shadowed entrance takes on a greater importance for the metering and can cause an overexposure of sections that are directly lit.

Zoomed in, the metering (Multi-pattern) takes into account the dominance of the shadowed entrance area at the centre of the frame. Nevertheless, the exposure remains very accurate, and there is no overexposure of the brighter areas, and detail can be seen both in the foreground and in the areas behind the blue-green glass doors.

Photo Information
Format: JPEG Aperture: f5.2
Exposure: Program Shutter Speed: 1/160 s.
Resolution: 2816 x 2112 Flash: Off
Quality: Fine ISO: 80
File Size: 2.3 MB Focal Length: 114 mm (35 mm Eq.)

The photo shows no chromatic aberration, nor any distortion. However, when observed closely at 100% scale on a monitor, a slight amount of noise can be observed as random coloured dots, and the effect of the compression can be seen as a slight loss of detail.
